Another of my standing-in-the-middle-of-a-field photos. This one is special though, because it was taken during a blue moon!
You’ve probably heard the phrase ‘once in a blue moon’ before, but I doubt you know what it means! A blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month — a rare occasion, because of the 28-day lunar cycle, and the only slightly-longer calendar month! Because of the 11-day difference between the lunar year and the calendar year, over 3 years those days accumulate until a ‘bonus’ full moon arrives! And that’s the blue moon.
It’s not actually blue, unfortunately, and the ‘blue’ prefix is apparently steeped in folklore. Anyway! Here’s the photo, taken around 3am. You can see just how bright this particular full moon was, helped by the fact that it’s very low in the sky. Many people don’t even believe me when I say it’s the moon! If you can’t see the grass, your monitor is too dark!
This is a post for Skywatch Friday.

Fine by me, Pinkie — I know a lot of people that use my photos as wallpapers, and that’s the main reason I don’t cover them in nasty copyright notices… and why I put nice, big versions up!
I love the stars too, though they only come out with very long exposures… and one of the main reasons I enjoy the night-time photography!
Yours is nice — I presume it’s a crop of a larger photo? I’ve never tried taking photos of the moon itself… I should try!

That’s the thin layer of clouds moving in front of the moon, for the 30 seconds or so that the photo took to expose
And it was!

Lovely capture, the tree really sets that sky and moon off well.

This is stunning, absolutely gorgeous pic! How on earth did you manage to do this? One would thought that it would burn more with the full moon. I can see some details in the foreground but can’t say if it’s grass or what. Thought that my monitor adjustments was fine, was trained by pros. Guess I was wrong or within last few years things have chance. Anyways, great, GREAT capture for SWF! Have a nice weekend!
