I did mention something about highlighting old-and-neat blog posts, right? And then I stopped doing it. I blame video games. Delicious, winter-release video games. If you’ve ever played a roleplaying game of any kind — Dungeons and Dragons, Vampire: The Masquerade, Baldur’s Gate on the PC… you need to now play Dragon Age: Origins. Don’t ask questions on this one — it’s good. It’s probably the best (and last) single-player RPG of its kind, and it’s been a long time coming. It’s available for PC and consoles.
And with that geek-squeal out of the way (really, it’s that good) — this week’s Golden Oldie is…
Why LAN parties are awesome and clubbing is crap
If you don’t know what a LAN party is, it’s defined in there. Why am I choosing that story in particular? Because next Friday I’m off to another LAN — and if you want to see my report/experiment from the previous LAN party, start with this blog entry, where I introduce Dr Sebastian House…
More pretty, autumnal photos to follow — either over the weekend, or on Tuesday.

Clubbing IS crap. You have to get up and move and look good and stuff.
I really wanna attend a LAN party. But they’re more like gatherings, aren’t they?

Yeah, ‘party’ is a bit of a misnomer. But… at big ones like this, there IS some partying — usually of the drinking-and-playing-non-computer games variety. Some going out for dinner too…
But yeah, more of a gathering of computers, and nerds.

As in… what is a room full of 5,000 computers…?
Games! For an entire week/weekend!

Holy geekdom, Batman!
That’s like…..I don’t even know……but there’s probably a minimum IQ just to get into that place.

They are usually very, very geeky events. Celebrations of Nerdom, I guess.
But in recent years as gaming has become more popular, more sporty, it has attracted er… less-desirables. Dare I say… thugs. Sporting jocks

Ha ha ha…They sound fun, but my geek quotient isn’t high enough to truly appreciate the glory of a LAN party. I actually prefer clubbing, lol! Anything that pairs music with alcohol is the shit in my book!
Love your blog, Sebbie! Makes me laugh out loud, which makes people near me question my already questionable sanity.

The joke’s on them…! You’re the one that gets to find me funny, enjoy my photos and otherwise make your day all the more enjoyable — who cares if they think you’re insane… (we all are… a little bit…)
I do like clubbing. It has its place. I just wouldn’t do it regularly… for physical reasons (my ears).

I am seriously considering a pair of ear plugs to take with me the next time I go clubbing. It certainly can be horrendously crap, with terrible music and no conversation (shouting the same thing three times in somebody’s ear isn’t fun). If the music is good it can be awesome though, so I try and stick to nights where that is guaranteed now.
I haven’t been to any big LANs, just little gaming sessions with friends. They are great though. Throw in some hot girls who aren’t paid to be there and it’d be just about ideal.

Woahhh! Easy on! We’re still a little way off girls willingly attending LANs I’m afraid.
Well, OK, there’s 1 or 2 (I happen to be friends with them, so that’s cool) — but the vast majority are boyfriends-of or even sisters-of guys that are there. There must be something scary about a hall full of guy-gamers. I can’t imagine what it is but…
And yeah — I had a LOT of fun clubbing at university, don’t get me wrong. I just have tinnitus now…
