… but unfortunately, the photos here were taken yesterday and the day before, when the sun was not out. Actually, the sun isn’t even out right now, but there are patches of blue sky and trees are actually throwing shadows, so there must be some light somewhere up there; there is HOPE. Anyway, yesterday we spent the day recuperating after The World’s Most Expensive Drunken Experience. You see, when even the most basic oil platform worker earns  £60,000 ($90,000) per…

So, I’ve been here for about 36 hours, and two main things have made themselves known: a) It’s incredibly expensive here. Like, twice as expensive as London. Almost £10 ($15) for a dessert. Beer and some nuts at the concert hall cost £10. Basically, everyone here is fairly rich, and there’s a vast amount of money in the economy, so it’s all inflated — to them, it’s not very expensive. It’s been levelled a few times, cut up and resculpted and had its innards gutted and sold off numerous times — but there has been SOMETHING here since the 1300s. About 20 years ago the National Trust bought it and have been managing it since — and it’s lovely! The blue windows were a bit of luck — it had…

Being the gracious hosts that they are, they obviously offered to take a photo of me looking like shit and wishing for a swift, painless death. I like to think I managed to look a little defiant, but really I just look knackered. Those 9 months without travel have left me really rather unfit… We’re going for an ‘easier walk’ today, apparently. I’m packing the amphetamines. Notice how I still managed to take my glasses off before the photo was…
