… I might even be a celibate gay like him too at this rate. (Though, with one of my cousins now successfully married off, there is slightly less pressure on me to, er, perform… in the Jewish sense…) Anyway, the genius, polymath, inimitable and generally-awesome Stephen Fry twittered a link to a 30-minute video interview. Ostensibly, from the title, it’s some kind of retrospective… but it really isn’t. Stephen spends half an hour giving us a succinct and hyperacute overview…

I don’t know where to start with this, the subject that surely supersedes all others. It — life, necessity and peace — begins and ends with education. With a good education the world is your oyster. Without education… God, it’s so tricky to put into words, but I’ll try. The expanse of your knowledge, your wisdom, your skills and ‘working set of data’ is only limited by your ability to learn, to educate yourself; or to be educated. But it’s a feedback…

[In the olden days I used to always have punchy, interesting titles on my blog entries. Funny how that's kind of died down. I wonder if more people would read if I try to be sensational...] Yesterday I began an epic journey of introspection self-actualisation. I’m trying to digest 2009 by labelling the major milestones or stand-out points as good, bad or ugly. I actually made a list on paper (I was in the car), and I couldn’t actually come…

I don’t think I’ve told many people about my aspirations of world domination, but perhaps it’s the kind of thing that manifests and makes itself known in other ways. Maybe it’s the sparkly glint in my eye, or the grandiose sweep of my arms when discussing important issues…

Every day there are more of them. You look around and you’re sure there’s a few more than last time. One by one everyone’s becoming a geek. Eventually there’ll just be you and your infatuation with reality TV — everyone else will be happily geeking away. But what’s this? You want to become a geek? You don’t want to be the last one boozing and partying and subsisting away the best years of your life? ‘Let me on the band wagon!’…

I’ve covered the sorry state of knowledge and inherent lack of truth that plagues contemporary society. But it didn’t start yesterday or even 100 years ago! It’s an eternally recurring theme of dumbing-down and almost-truths dispensed by nasty people posing as intellectual authorities over thousands of years. There is an endemic ‘loss of wisdom’ that has an iteratively degenerative effect, gaining more momentum with each generation. Historically these lies, these tales, were of a philosophical or mythical nature and virtually…
